13.1.2 Emollient creams and ointments, antimicrobial-containing

Medway and Swale CCGs recommend that emollients containing antimicrobials be prescribed as acute to encourage regular review of the need to continue use of an antimicrobial emollient.

These products should be used during skin infection only, and under the long term review of dermatology.

The BNF recommends when to use emollients containing an antibacterial and as such, preparations e.g. Dermol 500 containing an antibacterial should be avoided unless infection is present or is a frequent complication.

These products have 2 additional antiseptic agents so can be used where there is either a significant risk of infection or past history of recurrent skin infections e.g. some cases of atopic or gravitational eczemas, or those on Isotretinoin.
