13.1.4 Emollients, Urea-containing

Urea can cause stinging and irritation for some people, and preparations are generally more costly. These products should be used as second line where an antipruritic is needed and a standard emollient is not effective.

These are designed for short-term use only.

Contains Lauuromacrogols for additional anti-itch properties.

This is useful where there is need for a more hydrating without being greasy and there is lots of itching. E.g. older patient excoriating dry, itchy, but non-inflammed skin.

Contains ‘Lactic acid’ which is an alphahydroxy-acid which is useful as a keratolytic in conditions such as keratosis pilaris, in addition to the hydrating qualities of Urea. The Lactic acid is not ‘water retaining’ in itself.
