Diabetes - updated NICE guidance

You may be aware of the recent NICE announcement about updated guidance for diabetes. Updated NICE guideline (NG17) covers care and treatment for adults (aged 18 and over) with type 1 diabetes, NICE guideline (NG28) on type 2 diabetes in adults: management, and NICE guideline (NG18) covers diabetes (type 1 and type 2) in children and young people: diagnosis and management.

In March 2022, NICE reviewed the evidence and updated the recommendations on diagnosis and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), replacing existing recommendations on diagnosis and CGM. Links are to content of NG17 but changes are also reflected in other guidelines.

Patients should be assured that we are working closely with local diabetes specialist colleagues and other local stakeholders in relation to the implementation of this updated guidance, with the aim to maximise benefits, prioritise diabetes patients with the greatest clinical need, and allow all patients access to the best possible treatment for their clinical circumstances.

We would politely ask you and your patients to please bear with us whilst we complete this process. Further information will be released as soon as it is available.

The original FreeStyle Libre system is being discontinued in the UK by 31stDecember 2022. For patients prescribed original FreeStyle Libre sensors, prescriptions should be changed to FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors.
